Opening the book on colour

21 December 2010

Sequana founder Mary Shaw, a key speaker at the upcoming Australian International Furniture Fair seminar series in February, says the recent publication of a book on her work has proven a worthy vehicle for bringing together her ideas on colour and design.

The book, titled A L'École de Mary Shaw and published by Editions Chene, Hachette earlier this year, was the second in a series, Shaw confirmed.

"The first book published was A L'École de Kelly Hoppen, a leading designer in the UK. Chene wanted a book showing the style of the designer, a kind of ‘school' with lessons aimed at the public on how to obtain that style, including advice, tips, how to start and so on. Hachette then proposed to publish a book about my own work and style."

The new book was in contrast to the more pared back, neutral tones of Kelly Hoppen's work, Shaw said.

"A L'École de Mary Shaw is all about colour, homes and interiors to be lived in, and all the philosophy that goes with that; how important it is to stay linked to nature in a rapidly growing and very urban world. Again it is aimed at the public, how to get started, with tips and advice."

Following the book's release, Shaw said she was looking forward to spreading her ideas to a wider - and English-speaking - audience through her appearance at the AIFF industry seminar series.

Shaw will present her seminar ‘Creating Ambience' On Wednesday 2 February from 12.30pm - 1.30pm as part of the seminar series at the Australian International Furniture Fair (AIFF), taking place at Sydney Exhibition Centre from 2-4 February 2011.
