Influence of the Orient

15 February 2012

Known for her fresh and inspiring palette of designs, Grace Garrett has quickly carved a niche in the interiors market for her dramatic yet contemporary collection of textiles and accessories. The Australian designer, who shares her time between Singapore and Sydney, has a knack for design and enables decorators to create custom fabrics, wallpapers, rugs and accessories that are also suitable for drapery and upholstery.

Much of her work is inspired by the variety of cultural influences and landscapes that are found throughout Asia. Bold and sophisticated geometric patterns are mixed with soothing botanical prints evoking images of islands and relaxation. A colour palette that is bright and bold with shades of blue, citrus and berry combined with smart neutrals create an inspiring modern collection.

There are over 20 designs inspired by Asia to choose from including Bamboo Poles featuring circles depicting a pile of cut bamboo ends, or Chinese Door is a large-scale, sophisticated floral inspired by a wooden carving and has a soothing botanical influence. A bold and compelling fabric is Crossing, a vibrant zig zag stripe influenced by the many iron gates and crossings seen on my walks in Singapore. Bintan Mangroves is a design featuring mangrove roots that evokes images of tropical islands and relaxation. The Kelong design is inspired by the fishing huts seen throughout Indonesia, Malaysia and the Phillipines. They are built without the need for nails, using rattan to bind tree trunks and wooden planks together. Rice as the name suggests is a stylised grain of rice a staple in the Asian diet - a simple but bold repeating pattern. The simplicity of Bambo Mat ties the collection together and is available in over 20 standard colour options. Uchiwa Fan design draws inspiration from a Japanese fan. They are made of paper on a bamboo frame, usually with a design painted on them. The fan symbolizes friendship, respect and good wishes.

All designs are customisable in both colour and design scale. They are available on rugs, wallpaper, cushions, lampshades and upholstery. To see the Grace Garrett range, visit Emily Ziz at http://www.emilyziz.com/gracegarrett.html
